What Makes PR1 So
Special?
The PR1 trail follows a narrow volcanic ridge high above the clouds, offering constant panoramic views across Madeira’s central mountain range and some of the most photogenic scenery on the island.
Hundreds of stone steps, tunnels cut through rock, and cliffside pathways make this hike feel engineered and adventurous — unlike the flatter levada walks found elsewhere in Madeira.
At dawn, hikers often experience a cloud inversion, where the mountain peaks rise above a sea of clouds — one of the most unforgettable moments you can witness in Madeira.

How Difficult is PR1?
PR1 Vereda do Areeiro is considered a challenging mountain hike and is best suited to hikers with good fitness and confidence on exposed terrain. The trail includes long stair climbs, steep descents, narrow ridges and significant elevation changes between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo. While the path is well marked, the physical demand and exposure mean it is not recommended for beginners, those with a strong fear of heights, or anyone unprepared for sustained uphill and downhill sections. In good weather, experienced hikers will find it demanding but extremely rewarding.
PR1 Weather & Trail Conditions
Weather in Madeira’s central mountains can change rapidly, even when coastal areas are sunny. Strong winds, sudden fog, intense sun exposure and occasional official closures can affect the PR1 trail. Visibility can drop quickly, especially along the exposed ridge sections, and wind gusts can make certain stretches more challenging. It is important to check current conditions before starting the hike and to begin early in the day for the most stable weather. Many visitors choose guided hikes for real-time weather monitoring and flexible start times.
Best Time to Hike PR1
The best time to hike PR1 is early in the morning, particularly at sunrise, when temperatures are cooler and crowds are minimal. Sunrise departures often reward hikers with dramatic cloud inversions and soft golden light over the mountain peaks. Summer offers long daylight hours but can be busy and hot, while winter provides quieter trails with a higher chance of wind-related closures. Starting early is recommended year-round for the safest and most enjoyable experience.
What to Pack for PR1
Proper preparation is essential for PR1 due to its exposed mountain environment. Sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are mandatory, along with a windproof jacket, sun protection, and at least 1.5 litres of water per person. Weather conditions can shift quickly, so light layers are recommended even on warm days. A headlamp or torch is necessary for the short tunnels along the route, and energy snacks are useful for the sustained climbs between peaks.
